Empowering Portable Ultrasound Devices with a Customized APEX-P200 Edge AI System

はじめに

With the rise of processed foods and aging populations, health awareness continues to grow. However, healthcare systems face serious hospital capacity and staffing shortages. For non-urgent chronic disease monitoring, point-of-care diagnostics offer a practical solution, bringing medical care beyond hospital walls. The key to this shift lies in portable devices that deliver clinical accuracy and reliability within compact designs.

A North American medical device company developing a portable ultrasound system partnered with Innodisk to integrate the APEX-P200 edge AI system. Leveraging Innodisk's customization and ODM support, the device achieved strong processing performance without sacrificing size or reliability, enabling advanced diagnostics in diverse settings.

Edge Hardware for Beamforming and Imaging

During the customer’s hardware development phase, Innodisk stepped in as a trusted edge AI hardware partner. The team worked closely with the customer to understand the product concept, end-user scenarios, and identify the most suitable solution.

When an ultrasound probe (transducer) emits sound waves into the patient’s body, internal organs reflect those waves back to the probe’s array elements. Beamforming is the core processing technique that combines these signals through algorithms to produce clear images. This process is repeated hundreds of times per second and demands significant computing power.

The APEX-P200 equipped with an Intel® Core™ i7-13800HE processor featuring 14 cores (6 performance and 8 efficiency cores), supports parallel processing for tasks such as signal acquisition, beamforming, image rendering, and HMI responsiveness without performance bottlenecks.

However, the customer aimed to go beyond basic image generation—they wanted a smart diagnostic assistant that could enhance clinical efficiency and reduce the risk of misdiagnosis. To achieve this, the system needed more advanced image processing capabilities and the ability to analyze data against large medical datasets.

The customer’s use of 3D ultrasound technology significantly increased data volume, requiring beamforming and imaging workloads to be distributed between the CPU and GPU.

Fortunately, the APEX-P200 already integrates the right capabilities to handle this level of demand. It features an NVIDIA RTX 2000 Ada GPU (MXM module) with 3,072 CUDA cores, 96 Tensor cores, and 24 RT cores. The powerful CUDA cores accelerate the processing of large volumes of ultrasound data. The RT cores, with ray-tracing and shader capabilities, help render photorealistic volumetric images in real time. The inclusion of 96 Tensor cores enables AI features such as automatic detection of anomalies, organ measurement, and real-time probe guidance—helping medical professionals make faster and more confident clinical decisions.

To handle such intensive workloads, the platform includes up to 64GB of DDR5 memory for real-time buffering and processing, along with 512GB of NVMe storage for storing large volumes of scan data. Innodisk also provides flexible memory and storage options, offering a complete, integrated solution.

Connectivity is another key pillar of portable ultrasound functionality. The APEX-P200  includes three 2.5GbE LAN ports, two of which support Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) up to 30W. This allows data transmission and power delivery to occur simultaneously over a single Ethernet cable, without the need to switch modes or use separate connections.

In portable ultrasound systems, LAN connectivity plays a dual role. Externally, it connects to hospital intranet systems for accessing PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System) and EMRs (Electronic Medical Records). Internally, it links to essential components like the ultrasound probe. However, since portable systems are less likely to access the hospital intranet during field use, device-to-device communication becomes the primary role of LAN. This makes PoE especially important, as its dual function of power and data over a single cable simplifies both wiring complexity and system architecture.

Tailored Customization Through Close ODM Collaboration

While the APEX-P200 successfully integrated all the key components required for the customer’s application, the standard version was not yet a perfect fit.

To meet the customer’s goal of achieving an ultra-compact form factor for their portable ultrasound device, the Innodisk team customized the external layout and made specific I/O adjustments. A dedicated thermal solution was also developed to ensure stable performance within limited internal space. The system was delivered preloaded with the customer’s customized firmware for immediate deployment.

This collaboration reflects Innodisk’s flexible and efficient ODM process, supporting seamless integration from prototyping and validation to production and final delivery.

A Trusted and Proven Solution

Innodisk’s APEX-P200 is more than just powerful—it has passed CE, FCC, and UKCA safety certifications and was honored with the 2026 Taiwan Excellence Award. The system is already being deployed across multiple countries in the Americas and Europe.

Customers can also choose to integrate Innodisk’s industrial-grade DRAM and flash storage modules, built to withstand shock, vibration, and wide temperature fluctuations. With guaranteed long-term supply and comprehensive after-sales support, the APEX-P200 is an ideal choice for healthcare customers seeking a stable, field-proven solution.
It also gives customers confidence that the hardware would be ready for regulatory approvals and timely product launch.

成果

The customer’s portable ultrasound device not only enhances the diagnostic experience in home-based care, but also enables on-site medical screening in workplaces, schools, and remote locations. Thanks to the use of industrial-grade components, the system remains reliable under vibration and temperature fluctuations, making it a preferred choice for air ambulance deployments as well.

Innodisk APEX-P200 serves as the integrated computing platform behind the device, and Innodisk’s support team played a vital role in turning the customer’s concept into a robust, deployable medical solution.
